So much better than I thought!

My run yesterday was so much better and easier than I thought it would be! My last post was me whining about how I was not sure if I could do it. I got on the treadmill, did my brisk 5 minute warm up walk and ran 8 minutes, walked 5 and ran 8 again! I didn't cheat at all - I ran at the same speed the whole 8 minutes both times and didn't have to stop at all! I was amazed!

When I got done with my first 8 minutes (when I started walking) I actually felt like I could have kept going! It was weird because I thought I would be dying by then but I really felt like I could have gone another 5 minutes if I had to!

I think if I tell myself in my mind how long I have to run, my mind knows not to let my body give up on me until I am done or at least getting close to the end. I started my 8 minute run and I still felt really good at 4 minutes and still at 5 and 6 and 7. When I got close to the end, I did feel tired, but not so tired that I couldn't have kept going. I think that is what I am going to have to do with my 20 minute run tomorrow.

Yes, you read that right - 20 minutes! I cannot believe I have to run 20 minutes straight without stopping! The funny thing is, I do give myself permission to fail tomorrow because 20 minutes is more than double the longest I have run at one time. I just ran 8 minutes in a row yesterday and that was the first time I had even done that! If I have to walk 1-2 minutes in the middle of the run, I am not going to beat myself up about it because that is tough stuff! I am not going to go into the run expecting to stop but if I feel I just have to, then I will. If I feel tomorrow like I did yesterday then I think I will be able to do it! I always get nervous when I have to do a more challenging workout the next day! I actually get a little feeling in my stomach but I think it actually helps me do better when I run! Wish me luck!

To continue or not?

I am not sure what to do about this whole couch to 5k thing. I am in week 5 but it has been three days since my last workout. It seems like whenever I get great momentum and start doing really well, something happens to throw me off.

During my first week 4 attempt, I hurt my hamstring really bad and took off 6 days so I repeated week 4. Now I am on the second workout of week 5 and have to run 8 minutes, walk 5 then run 8 again. This would be the first time I have run 8 minutes straight if I am able to do it.

I need to go workout right now but am trying to decide if I think I can continue this. I don't want to give up but the problem is, I just don't know if I am physically able to do this because I am overweight right now. It is a lot harder to run with extra weight on your body than if you are a normal weight or at least close to normal. I am not trying to make excuses but I am trying to be realistic about what my body can do.

I didn't start doing this workout plan to lose weight (although I need to badly) but I did it to prove to myself I can and to get my heart in better shape and also make a habit of working out. I know I have to eat a lot better to lose more weight but I thought this would move me in that direction. I haven't really been eating well so far in this plan so I wonder if that actually is making it harder on me.

I think for now, I am just going to keep trying and see how it goes. If I fail at my workout today (as in - not running the whole 8 minutes) I think I will just redo this workout in two days. I really want to get through this whole plan but that would mean in less than 4 weeks, I would be running 30 minutes without stopping. I just don't see that happening, but I guess I will have to wait and see.

Standing tall!

Just thought I would add a picture of my little cutie now that he can stand. He can't really do it all by himself yet except for a few seconds. But it is so fun that he can stand even a little now - he had no interest in it at all until recently. He also got two teeth within two days and I can see another about to come through - no pictures of it though since he won't sit still for them!

20 questions

1. If you had to could you take a vow of silence for 48 hours?

- Not sure I could. If someones life depended on it, then yes. I guess it depends on the reason I am doing it.

2. What is your favorite kind of soup?

- Chicken tortilla - my momma's recipe. With tortilla chips. Yum!

3. How often do you cut your hair?

- Oh gosh, it has been about 3 or 4 months. That is unusual for me - it used to always be 8 weeks at the most. Mommyhood has taken over!

4. If you had to could you do your own income taxes? And have them be correct?

- Yes. Todd does them normally but I think I could in a pinch!

5. What is your method to reading a magazine?

- I didn't know there were methods. I guess I would say front to back?!

6. How many magazines do you subscribe to?

- I am not sure right now. I know we get Rolling Stone (I hate it), Reader's Digest, Parents, Baby Talk, Parenting, Self, Shape, Oprah and maybe 1 or 2 others.

7. What is/was your paternal grandfather's name?

- Robert.

8. And your maternal grandfather's name?

- Robert - haha (see above).

9. I know I'm tired when:

- I stop talking so much.

10. What color(s) do you associate with Spring?

14. What is your favorite current tv drama?

- Um, does a soap opera count? If so, Days of Our Lives.

15. Who do you think is NOT funny, but others think IS funny?

- Hmmm. That is tough. Not much I guess, I try to find the humor in everything.

16. Three things you've been meaning to do, but haven't gotten around to yet:

- Lose 40 pounds, re-read the last 2 Harry Potter books, get a job.

17. What is your noodle of choice?

- Fettuccine.

18. What commercial are you so sick of?

- The Palm Pre commercial (creepy looking girl) and the KFC double down chicken sandwich. It was a tie - they are both annoying and it proves I have seen them too many times because I know what they are about. ***Special note - I just learned that KFC is testing out this sandwich in two markets only, Omaha and Baltimore, Maryland I guess. Weird. So if you haven't seen it then you must not live in one of the two cities. ***

19. If you gave birth today to octuplets and had sole naming rights, what would you name them? You can assume four of each sex, or make your own mix-up.

- Piper Elizabeth, Paige Joy, Hannah Renee, Reagen Nicole, McKenna Brianne, Brayden Michael, Justin Matthew, Derek James.

20. Is there something hanging over your head that you need to do right now?

- Scrapbooking, cleaning my house, the backyard.

He sure has changed!

I am really bummed because Blogger didn't recognize the last two pictures I tried to upload here to show my baby each month since he was born. So, the first one you see is him at just over two months. Anyway, I just think it is so fun to look back at how much he has changed over the last 9 months! I have always thought he was cute, but I think he has gotten cuter (I know, I am sooooo biased)! I know I should wait until he is a year old to do a post like this but I just couldn't help it! Here he is!

Xander at about 2 months.

Xander at 3 months - the first picture we decided to do with George. We wanted to take a picture with him each month until he is a year to show how he has grown and changed. I really wish we would have started this at birth but oh, well!

Xander at 4 months.

Xander at 5 months.

Xander at 6 months.

Xander at 7 months.

Xander at 8 months.

Am I the only one who does this?

When I am looking around on ebay, I do not hesitate to report people who charge ridiculous amounts for shipping (ebay suggests you do this if you notice it). If you know anything about ebay, you know that you are charged a fee for each listing based on the selling price and the shipping is not included in the final amount. So here is an example - let's say you are selling a shirt for $10 and $3 shipping. Well, someone who is trying to circumvent fees (that is ebay's wording) would charge $5 for the shirt and $8 for shipping. That is excessive shipping since it does not cost that much to send one shirt. They are trying to get around fees because then they only have to pay fees on the $5 instead of the $10 from the first example.

Anyway, I always see people who have a cheap auction price and high shipping and I report them every time. Maybe that is mean of me, but ebay actually says they don't have enough people employed to catch all of the people violating this policy out there and those who do it are messing up the system for everyone else. I know that reporting stuff does work because I have looked at an auction after I reported it and saw that it had been removed. I don't feel bad because dishonest people need to be called out. Am I the only person who does this or feels this way? I can't be, but sometimes I feel like I am. Oh, well.

Has it been that long?

I just looked at the last post I wrote and it was on Monday! I can't even believe that! Where did this week go? Too fast, that is for sure.

Xander was 9 months old today! I can hardly believe he is growing up this fast! I am going to have to take his picture tomorrow with George and post it. He had his 9 month appointment on Wednesday and it went well. He got one shot and barely cried so that was good. He is 20 lbs 5 oz and 27 3/4 inches long. His head is still big - he is in the 98th percentile! But then again, his head has been consistently big since he was born so no surprise there.

My friend Laura's daughter, Claire, turned 1 today and we went to Lincoln for her birthday party tonight. It was fun but it reminded me how fast the time goes and how Xander will be 1 before I know it - I better start planning his party now. I do have some ideas for it so that is good.

Tomorrow we are going to Lincoln again for a birthday dinner for my brothers and my mom. That should be an enjoyable night also.

I did my second workout of week 4 in couch to 5k today. It was pretty hard, but I did the whole thing, didn't cheat and somehow survived! My legs are sore but that is ok - it feels good to know I worked out. I have told myself that I will not repeat week 4 again, so I am doing my last week 4 workout on Sunday and on Tuesday, it is on to week 5! That will mean I am halfway done! I am pretty nervous, but I figure if I am already at 16 minutes of running in my workout, then it won't be that much harder if I keep slowly adding more time.

On another note, my husband decided to join me in my couch to 5k training. I am not sure why he wanted to do it but I think he said he just wanted to be in better cardio shape. It stinks because even in his first week he can run much faster than me, but that shouldn't really surprise me. Good for him for trying too!

There isn't much else new otherwise. I have applied for a few jobs but haven't gotten any calls, so I suppose I should apply for some more this next week. I am just staying busy everyday with my little man and housework. It's never ending! :)

Excuses, excuses

When it comes to me and working out, I find that it is so easy for me to find an excuse not to work out. I am sure that is true for a lot of people but it has always been the case for me.

I took several days off from my couch to 5k workouts because my hamstring was really sore. It was painful for about 4 days even though I was stretching it out a lot.

Tonight, I decided to get back into it and quit making excuses. I didn't quite do a week 4 workout (that is where I left off) and I did more than a week 3 workout. In other words, I ran a little less than a week 4 workout and a little more than a week 3 workout. I thought it was going to be super hard since I took about 6 days off, but it was easier than I thought! I feel really good after doing the workout and remember why I wanted to do this in the first place.

I am going to start doing a weights workout on my off days from running to build some muscle and tone my body more. I have always enjoyed weights and I am pretty strong. Plus, I don't find it near as hard as doing a cardio workout.

Anyway, no more excuses, unless I literally tear, pull or break something! I am going to finish the C25K workout if it kills me! I need to sign up for a 5k later this fall so it gives me something to look forward to and a reason to stick with it.

I have always wanted to be a runner and this is the first step in accomplishing that goal. I would like to be able to run for my workouts as I think it is one of the best cardio workouts you can do.

My week 4 is starting over on Wednesday and I will do the other two workouts Friday and Sunday and then week 5 will start Tuesday of next week and so on. I am excited to keep going with this and to see where it takes me!

A day in my life...

Because my blog is titled "A Day in the Life", I thought I would write a post about what a typical day is like for me.

I tend to think my stay-at-home mom experience is different than most other moms. I am not sure why, but in a way I feel inferior and I feel like I don't do enough every day. I guess it doesn't matter - everyone has their own life and their own ideas of what a good day looks like.

Here is my typical day -

I go to bed so late most nights since I am a night owl. I just can't seem to get out of the bad habit of going to bed late. Most nights, it is between 12 and 2 that I finally lay my head down. I wanted to preface the rest of this with that so you don't think I sleep in just because I am lazy!

Xander usually wakes up about 7:30-8. He will play a little bit in his crib before he starts whining for me to come get him and feed him. He doesn't really cry, but just starts 'talking' and whining loudly.

I feed him his bottle (we aren't at the point where he eats solids for his first feeding, though I would like to change that soon), then I change his diaper and set him back in his crib. I do this because he usually is ready for a nap pretty quickly and he plays with the few things in his crib until he falls asleep. Many times, I lay back down for an hour or so because of how late I go to bed (I would not function on 6-7 hours of sleep). After I get back up, he sometimes is still asleep and other times he is awake. If he is awake, I bring him downstairs to the family room to play with his toys down there. I then brew some coffee and get breakfast (yes, I check on him almost by the minute).

I watch my soap opera at 12 - yes I am pathetic - I admit it! :)
He eats again at 12 - a 4 oz bottle first then fruit with oatmeal, a little more oatmeal and juice. Then he plays again for about an hour until it is time for his nap. He usually lays down from about 1-3, but some days it is more like 1:30-3:30 or 4. He takes a good afternoon nap almost every day and he is usually pretty crabby if he misses it or if it is too short.

During his nap, I usually do some dishes, sometimes laundry and I surf the internet for a while. I check all the money saving blogs and print coupons and plan my grocery list - not everything I do online is worthless! Since I started my couch to 5k workouts, I usually do those while he is napping, and I try to shower before he wakes up so I can fully pay attention to him and play with him when he is up. I hate to leave him in his crib once he wakes up from a nap but sometimes I have to depending on the timing.

Once he is up, we play with toys some more until his 4 pm feeding. He then has a 5 oz bottle and then gets veggies with rice cereal and some juice. After his 4 pm feeding, he is almost always awake until he goes to bed for the night. He is almost 9 months so I think the two naps he takes a day is normal. I think once he gets closer to a year, we will see how he might do with one nap, but for now, two is the way to go. He plays and I will sometimes start making dinner while he is playing or sometimes he stays in the high chair after he eats so I can do dishes, cook or clean up the kitchen.

His last feeding is at 8 pm. He just gets an 8 oz bottle and no solids. I don't know if this is the right way to feed him on a daily basis, but he seems to be pretty content with it and doesn't act hungry in between meals so we will stick with it for now. After his bottle, we hold him for a little bit and then put him to bed. He doesn't have a long nighttime ritual - he just gets a bottle, gets a diaper change, gets his sleeper put on, gets his vitamins and a few hugs and kisses then it's off to bed! I should read to him more often - I only do it about once a week right now. He does seem to like it so I should do it more. I put him to bed while he is fully awake and he usually falls asleep within 20 minutes. Some nights it takes him a little bit longer, but most nights he does well.

After he is asleep, Todd and I usually watch some TV together, read the paper or I sometimes clip and organize coupons. I sometimes fold laundry then and clean up the dishes from dinner. I have to admit that I don't do a lot of stuff after he goes to sleep. I tend to relax in the evening and check out the internet. We don't have cable, so sometimes I will watch a movie or TV show on Netflix. I also just read a lot of articles and random things online.

I also must admit that I don't do a lot of cleaning other than laundry and dishes. I sometimes do, but it's not like I spend all day every day on my hands and knees scrubbing the toilet or bath tub or floors. Maybe I should, but I tend to do more of that stuff if we are having company. My house isn't the cleanest but I feel like I would miss out on a lot of time with Xander if all I did was clean! Plus, he is getting older everyday and the messes will always be there!

The other thing I do 2-3 days a week is go to the stores to get some awesome deals! The stores I go to the most are Walmart, Target, Walgreen's and Baker's (one of our local grocery stores). I find awesome clearance stuff all the time at Target, Walgreen's and Baker's. I usually go right after X's 12 pm feeding and then put him down for a nap when we get home. If we go to the store on Thursdays, we go after his 4 pm feeding since Todd is at work.

So that is most of it I think. I guess people might think my life is boring and it kind of is. But at least for right now, I love it. I am going to have to get a job unless some miracle happens so I am trying to enjoy each day I have with the kiddo! I would like to get better at life in general, as in, do more things, experience more and try to enjoy it more. I am just doing the best I can right now with what I have.

My new obsession

I have NEVER been much of a history person at all. I was good at most subjects in school but was never really interested in history.

Recently, I started watching the Showtime series 'The Tudors' online with our netflix subscription. As the name suggests, the show is about the life of King Henry VIII. I am absolutely enthralled with this story now! I have been researching as much as I can about this time period online since watching the show. It is so strange to me that I am suddenly interested in this time period in history. I think the reason I am so interested in this story now is because of how well acted the show is and it makes the story more interesting than just reading if off of a page.

I just got done watching Jeopardy and the the final question was about how the king used the Leviticus passage from the bible saying that if someone marries his brothers' wife it is unclean. I knew the answer right away and I was excited to see the question!

Too bad I don't have access to a free public library to go and rent a few books about the topic and learn even more.

My 16 minute run...

Well, the title might be a little bit misleading but I did run 16 minutes total in my workout today. Last week I was only at 9 minutes total of running for my workout but I skipped all the way to 16 minutes this week. That is what the workout says to do so it's not like I chose that much.

It was pretty hard but I knew it would be. The last 5 minute run, I thought I was going to die, but once I was done running, I felt really good! It was pretty sweet. I think I'm just amazed that I am already running this much because I have never been a runner at all! I am really curious to see if I can get all the way through this program and run 30 minutes straight at the end of it. That will be really tough but I am hoping I can make it!

Week 3 = Complete

I successfully completed week 3 of couch to 5k today. I am feeling pretty good about it. I thought my run/walk tonight was going to be terrible as I felt really tired before I started my workout. Surprisingly, the running part felt really easy and I felt like I could have gone longer! Before that workout, I was thinking I was going to have repeat week 3 as I didn't feel like the workouts had gone that well but after tonight, I think I am going to go on to week 4 on Tuesday.

I think even though I am not seeing a lot of physical changes in my body, I think my heart is already in better condition. I feel like each time I run, it gets easier. I love the feeling of not feeling so winded after 5 seconds of running. I was up to 3 minutes at a time this week and I think next week I have to do 5! That is nuts! In some ways I feel like I can do it and in some ways I feel like I can't.

I guess I will know in 2 days how it goes!

A few goals

So I decided to make a list of goals each month and post them here. I am a little late for this month but I wanted to list a few goals anyway. Every month I will list new goals and also how I did for the last month. I always have so many things I want to get done or accomplish and this is a way of being accountable.

Here are my August goals:

1. Lose 5 pounds. I have lost about 12 and need to lose a lot more but 5 is possible.

2. Be to week 5 of couch to 5k by the end of the month. This shouldn't be too hard if I just stick with it.

3. Organize the hall closet. Sheets and blankets and pillowcases - oh my! So much stuff and so unorganized!

4. Apply for jobs. It is looking like I HAVE to get one so I need to work on this now.

5. Get Xander's 9 month pictures taken.

6. Start planning X's birthday party - it may seem like a ways off, but it will come SO fast!

I think that is a good start - wish me luck!

Watch out for apple wedgers!

Who knew an apple wedger was so dang sharp? I sliced my finger open last night on it while cleaning the counters. I guess I should have known they were sharp - it does wedge through an apple quick for a reason! Anyway, I just thought I would say it - watch out! I swear my finger has never bled so bad! Ick.

A post by pictures

Well, my life is never too interesting, but it is my life!

I decided to post some pictures so you can know what is going on in my world. Most of the pictures have nothing to do with each other but I wanted to post them anyway.

Here are my bargains first. I posted this here too!

These are the grocery deals I got today. Of note - I got three boxes of Fiber One toaster pastries for $0.12 each! Walgreens (of all places) had them on clearance for $0.62 each and I had 3 coupons for $0.50/1. Also, I got one of my boxes of Rice Krispies for free thanks to a coupon I got from Vocalpoint for a free box. I ended up getting both boxes for $2.50. The soy milk was about $0.60 due to a coupon and a sale and the four Healthy Choice meals in the front were a total of $0.66 for all four thanks to some more great coupons I printed online. I also had a coupon for free yogurt. The total for all of this was $22.50 but I got register rewards back for the Ragu, Skippy and Rice Krispies at Walgreens so it makes it about $16.50.

This picture probably shows the funnest deals I got today! Granted, I did pay out of pocket for all of this stuff but the cool thing is that I got a lot of it at Walgreens and got a bunch of Register Rewards back so I can use that towards future purchases. I paid a little over $21 out of pocket for the stuff I got and got $19 in Rewards towards my next purchases. Also, Target had some great things on clearance and all of the makeup shown probably cost me about $1 total at Baker's! The candles were $0.84 each on clearance at Target (not bad for soy candles plus I love candles)! The hand soap was $0.02 after coupon - basically free! The deodorant was $0.75. I found the baby lotion in the back left at Walgreens on clearance and with coupon it was $0.19!!!

This is the free stuff I got in the mail this last week. You can see there is a coupon for a free package of Yoplait Fiber One yogurt with some $1.35 off coupons and a coupon for a free box of Rice Krispies cereal with several $1.00 coupons. The Full Plate Diet book was completely free too! It is an advance copy before the book comes out so that is pretty cool. I also got some tampons, pads and coupons to go with them and a sample of Nivea body wash with a coupon.

On to an even better subject! Xander is so mobile these days! He rolls and crawls around until he finds himself in strange spots like this! He is behind the swing near the wall! Crazy kiddo!

My little man is a messy eater!

Sitting in his bumbo after being fed with a silly look on his face. Also, I didn't clean his face very well!

He sure can get his knees under him but he so far has refused to do a regular crawl. Just an army crawl for him.

Something I need to work harder to avoid - Xander watching TV. He doesn't look at it much if it is on but every once in a while he stops what he is doing to observe!

No, he isn't really drinking soda at this age, we just thought it would be a cute pic!

He does act like he wants it though!

Just X being his cute little self!

Helping mommy with her new coupon sorting system.

This pic is out of order. The next one down should be next showing my mess of coupons. This is after I started organizing them.

So many coupons!

The football/baseball cards my husband has from childhood that I stole the sleeves from!

X trying to play with the computer. He always grabs at it when he can.

Our little Husker with his hat backwards.

And with the hat forwards.

Just smiling as usual!

Also out of order I think - just a big mess after eating! Luckily, we tend to keep his hands out of it so it is just on his face and bib!

A post by numbers

0 - The number of pounds I have lost in the last month. Boo. I lost about 12 then stalled. I need to start counting my points again and sticking to it and I am hoping sooner rather than later the walking/jogging will help me lose more too.

1 - I have one child and I just cannot decide if I want another. Some days I think yes but most days I think no.

2 - The number of (large) cups of coffee I have every day. I am not sure I could do without them now.

3 - Average number of days a week I go out bargain hunting.

5 - The number of years I will have been married as of September 18th!

6 - The number of workouts I have done in the couch to 5k plan. Will be 7 as of later today.

10- The number of hours I spent organizing all the coupons I have in my new folder system.

30 - The number of minutes most of my workouts are. Need to extend the time.

45 - Days until our 5th anniversary! Need to decide what to do and what to get for Todd!

109 - Days until my baby turns 1! His life has flown by so far.

143 - Days until Christmas! My FAVORITE holiday! I have already thought about gifts and what we will do for our Christmas card this year.

Couch to 5k week 3

Tomorrow I start my first workout with week 3 of couch to 5k. I am a little nervous. The plan says that I have to run for 3 mintues straight! I have no idea how I am going to do. I feel a little like I will be able to do it but I kinda feel I might fail too. I think I am going to plan on doing it and if it is just too hard, I may do a lesser version of the workout or I may decide to repeat week 2 to allow my body more time to get in better shape.

This whole thing is a bit crazy to me. It has been a while since I have been in shape and I am not sure this is the right way to go about this, but it sounded like a fun challenge. For me, it is always better to have a goal in mind when I start out doing something, otherwise I tend to fail or not really go anywhere. I want to get in good cardio shape but I really want to lose weight too. Hopefully this is just a step in the right direction.

Couch to 5k week 2

This week I am in week two of the couch to 5k plan. I have done two of the three workouts this week. I am a little behind, but not too much. I am going to work out tomorrow (Sunday) for my third workout this week even though Sunday technically starts the next week. Then next week I will work out Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and I will be right back on track. I don't think I am doing it wrong since really you are just supposed to walk/jog three times a week to stick with the program. It is nice because I never thought I would be able to run at all and I am already up to almost 10 minutes of running each workout. That is crazy to me! I have just never been a runner at all and I am still not, but I think I am on my way.

The first week I walked for 5 minutes to warm up then alternated 60 seconds of running with 90 seconds or walking for 20 minutes, followed by a 5 minute cool down. This week I am at 90 seconds of running alternating with 2 minutes of walking. Even though the walking is longer, so is the running. Next week I think I go up to running three minutes at a time. That will be hard! It looks like you do this two times:
Run 90 seconds, walk 90 seconds, run 3 minutes, walk 3 minutes.

I am not sure how that will go but the plan says to repeat weeks if you need to and to not push yourself too hard if you feel like you can't handle it. I don't think I will need to repeat any weeks and am hoping I can stick to the plan. At the end of the 3rd week or sometime in the 4th, I think I am going to sign up for a 5k which will give me a goal and a reason to stick with it (not to mention the financial commitment).

I am excited to see how this all goes and if I can actually run by the end of this whole thing!
